Just a couple of couples.

Happy Day o’ Love 2017. Last Valentines, I shared my top picks in love songs, and this year, I decided to carry on the merriment by highlighting my very favorite fictional couples. So here you go—my top 9 favorite TV/movie couples (because try as I might, I could not come up with a 10th couple…and I refused to slump to a “Ross and Rachel” or “Kate and Jack” pick).

9. April + Andy (Parks and Rec)

Sometimes the weird couple is the best couple. April and Andy are certainly two odd balls, but they love and support each other—quirks and all.

8. Gilbert + Ann (Ann of Green Gables)

Fun fact: I went through what I can only describe as a “phase of obsession” with Ann of Green Gables during my middle school years. Oddly enough, I never really liked Ann. In my opinion, the real stars were the scenery, the music, and that handsome and sincere Gilbert Blythe. He loved Ann for who she was and continued to pursue her, even when she threw him the heisman. Gilbert was a stud and my middle school self still has a crush on him.

7. Bill + Claire (The Cosby Show)

I know, I know—controversial choice. But if you can get past the fact that the real Bill Cosby turned out to be a terrible person, fictional Bill and his wife Claire are the coolest. I loved watching their interactions as a kid and remember thinking marriage must be fun because look at them! So for that reason, they make #7 on my list of best fictional couples. Not endorsing Bill; fully endorsing fun marriages.

6. Jim + Pam (The Office)

Probably the most popular fictional couple in recent years, Pam and Jim showcased a surprisingly healthy and fun relationship on everyone’s favorite comedy, The Office. Jim, the lovable friend, beats that pesky problem of unrequited love and proves that sometimes the guy really can get the girl.

5. Carl + Ellie (UP!)

Confession: I’ve never watched the entire movie “UP!” In fact, I rarely make it past the first 10 minutes where the beautiful and, let’s face it, heartbreaking story of Carl and Ellie is told. I think it’s about time that Pixar made an entire movie dedicated solely to this adorable couple. And if that happens, I’ll meet you at the theater with a pile of tissues.

4. Lucy and Jack (While You Were Sleeping)

Oh man. I don’t even know what to say about this couple…except that I distinctly remember watching this movie for the first time in elementary school and telling my mom I was going to marry Jack when I grew up. (Still waiting for you to give me a call, Jack…) I think what’s so sweet about this couple is that they truly enjoy each others’ company. And really, what’s cooler than loving someone who’s your best friend?

3. Kristina + Adam (Parenthood)

This couple is the definition of a team. They support and love each other well, even in the ever-turbulent Braverman house. I just love these two (especially Adam. I mean, C’MON).

2. Mary + George (It’s a Wonderful Life)

“George Bailey, I’ll love you till the day I die.” George and Mary’s relationship is proof that sometimes love can get better with time.

… And our #1 best fictional couple is….

1. Tammy Taylor and Coach (Friday Night Lights)

Duh.

Happy Valentines. You are loved.

Currently listening to “The Book of Love” by Peter Gabriel (because of the line “I love it when you read to me, and you can read me anything…” That gets me every time.)
